Knitting and embroidery patterns, ca.1910-ca.1950.

A collection of knitting, embroidery, and crochet patterns, along with a pattern for men's ties and several patterns for doll clothes. Most of the knitting patterns date from World Wars I and II; they include patterns for men's socks, sleeveless sweaters, a "helmet" (similar to a balaclava), a muffler, mittens for children, and a few miscellaneous other items. Many of the patterns were issued by the American Red Cross, and one was issued by the British War Relief Society. A sheet titled "Knitted Set for the Boy in the Army" gives directions for making a sweater, a cap, and socks. A booklet issued by the American Red Cross in 1917 gives directions for making a sweater, muffler, helmet, socks, bed socks, wristlets, wash cloths, and hot water bottle covers. Also included in the collection is the M.I.K. brand of sock measure. M.I.K. stood for Man in Khaki; the sock measure was to help the knitter measure the proper length for a pair of socks. The instruction sheet for the sock measure is also found. Many of the embroidery and cross stitch patterns are for alphabets. Also found are iron-on transfer patterns, including zodiac designs, patterns incorporating the names of the days of the week, flowers, alphabets, leaves, and religious designs. One set of designs for days of the week were meant for baby bids and include animals. The other set was intended for dish towels and include an old fashioned telephone, a coffee grinder, a pitcher and wash bowl, and a kerosene lamp. These large sheets of iron-on patterns also included some non-embroidery designs, such as a hobby horse head, Republican elephant and Democratic donkey pins, a dachshund skirt appliqué pattern, and Eva and Topsy pot holders. A stack of needlepoint canvas also came with the collection.

ca.50 items : chiefly ill. ; 50 cm. and smaller.
